Death of an elderly man burned in petrol arson at Syedpur: Police station besieged and road blocked over initial refusal to register case

On June 3, 2026, perpetrators committed arson using petrol on an under-construction house in Kacharypara, Khatamadhupur, Syedpur, Nilphamari, causing severe burns to 62-year-old Afaz Uddin. The victim died at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka on June 6. Following his death, on June 8, relatives and locals besieged the Syedpur police station and blocked the Saidpur-Nilphamari highway to protest initial police negligence in registering the case. Police eventually filed the case and initiated an investigation.
