Severe Jamuna Riverbank Erosion and Highway Collapse in Tangail

Intense erosion of the Jamuna River in Gopalpur and Bhunapur upazilas of Tangail has displaced over 100 families and threatened regional flood protection infrastructure. An 80-meter (approx. 60-foot segment) section of the Tarakandi-Bhuyapur regional highway in the Sakhariya-Nolin area of Hemnagar union collapsed around July 19-20, 2026, causing traffic suspension for over a week. The Water Development Board (BWDB) is conducting emergency mitigation using geo-bags and tree logs, while the local administration monitors the situation as residents evacuate due to flood fears.
