Severe waterlogging in Chattogram causes transport crisis; rail services resumed after repairs
Prolonged heavy monsoon rainfall (806mm), mountain runoff, and tidal influence caused severe waterlogging in Chattogram, disrupting rail services, daily life, and infrastructure. Inundation reached depths of knee to waist level in several areas. Key affected zones included Bahaddarhat, Muradpur, Chawkbazar, Agrabad, Panchlaish, Chandgaon, Mohra, Shamsherpara, and South Kattali. Approximately 10,000 families and 9,000 daily passengers were impacted. Rail services on the Chittagong-Cox's Bazar line faced a six-day suspension due to flooding on a 500-meter stretch of track near Shamsherpara and Jan Ali Hat station. Operations resumed on July 12, 2026, following emergency engineering work. Government officials visited the sites, and the army assisted in relief operations.
