Flash floods and unseasonal rain cause widespread Boro paddy crop loss in Habiganj district

Unseasonal heavy rainfall and upstream runoff from late April to mid-May 2026 caused severe flash floods in the Haor region of Habiganj. Over 11,300 hectares of Boro paddy were submerged, causing an estimated 340 crore BDT in economic losses. Official reports indicate that 23,904 farmers across 9 upazilas, including Lakhai, Nabiganj, Baniachong, Ajmiriganj, and Bahubal, were severely affected. Breaches in the Khowai and Karangi river embankments exacerbated the situation, also leading to power outages and economic hardship due to rising harvesting costs.
