Severe urban waterlogging and recurring drainage issues in Chattogram

Heavy rainfall starting April 28, 2026, caused severe waterlogging across Chattogram city, with water levels reaching up to 5 feet in key areas including Prabartak Mor, Muradpur, Sholoshahar, Chawkbazar, Bahaddarhat, Bakalia, Katalganj, Agrabad, Panchlaish, and Kapasgola. The incident was exacerbated by 30 temporary dams in canals for construction projects and systemic failures in mitigation projects. Despite major infrastructure investments, urban drainage systems continue to face failures due to poor waste management and uncoordinated development. The immediate crisis was resolved by the removal of obstructions by the City Corporation.
