16 spillway gates of Kaptai Dam opened and subsequently closed following flood management operations

Following two weeks of continuous rainfall, Kaptai Lake water levels reached 105.64 feet. To prevent structural damage, 16 spillway gates of the Kaptai Dam were opened between August 29 and August 30, 2026, discharging approximately 39,000 cusecs of water per second into the Karnaphuli River. The rising water submerged the local tourism hanging bridge, resulting in its indefinite closure. After water levels decreased, authorities closed all 16 spillway gates on September 6, 2026, at 9:00 PM, concluding the discharge operation.
