Recurring Railway Level Crossing Safety Crisis in Bangladesh

A significant safety crisis exists across Bangladesh's railway network where over 3,000 level crossings, many of which are unauthorized or unguarded, pose a constant threat to commuters. During the Eid-ul-Fitr 2026 period alone, 23 railway accidents occurred, resulting in 35 deaths and 223 injuries. Experts highlight that nearly 90% of rail fatalities occur at these neglected crossings due to severe staffing shortages and a lack of infrastructure investment.
